The merriest time of the year is upon us again, as holiday decorations pop up in every window and the chill of December sets in across the city.
Although the dark days and cold weather might make you want to hibernate in your apartment with an arsenal of Netflix shows and Chinese takeout, you shouldn’t spend your winter days cooped up under the covers.
From festive holiday happenings to parties and booze-filled food events, there’s no shortage of awesome things to do in NYC this month. So bundle up and get into the holiday spirit!

1. Gingerbread Lane

When: December 3 – 12To see a gingerbread village that will put your candy-clad cookie house to shame this season, check out Gingerbread Lane at the New York Hall of Science. This sweet exhibit features a sprawling display of edible buildings that are made solely from gingerbread, royal icing and candy.This gingerbread cookie community is designed, baked, built and decorated by chef Jon Lovitch over the course of an entire year. However, all of his hard work has paid off, as this town has earned the title of being the largest gingerbread village in the world!

2. Holiday Pop-Up Bar

When: December 3 – 23If you’re in serious need of some holiday spirits, make sure you stop by Miracle on Ninth St. This East Village pop-up bar from Nico de Soto boasts a beautiful christmas decor, holiday tunes, and myriad of tinsel that is sure to bring on the holiday cheer.Throughout the merry month this bar will be serving up a variety of festive cocktails. Those include the Bad Santa, made with two types of rum, arrack, pineapple and lemon juice, milk, and coconut butter; and the Three Wise Men, expertly crafted with Calvados, gingerbread syrup, and frankincense smoke. In addition, there’s also Santa-approved bar holiday snacks, like homemade cookies!

3. Battle of the Belgians

 When: December 6Make your way down to Jimmy’s No. 43 in the East Village for a day full of the finest Belgian beers around. On December 6th, the bar will be hosting Battle of the Belgians, an event where brewers and distributors from across the globe go head-to-head in an epic beer battle that brings both imported Belgian brews and American-made Belgian-style beers to the table.Attendees will have the chance to sample over 20 bottled Belgians including 12% Imports, Vanberg & Dewulf, Shelton Brothers, B. United, and Duvel as well as a variety of American beers on tap before voting for their favorite at the end of the day. In addition to unlimited beer samples, the bar will also be serving up brunch style snacks such as a whole smoked hog. May the best beer win!

4. Union Square Holiday Market

When: December 3 – 24If you haven’t finished your Christmas shopping yet, stop by the Union Square Holiday Market. Throughout the month, the red and white striped tents will host a variety of vendors and artists offering everything from hand-crafted jewelry, leather goods, and trinkets to gourmet food and even make-your-own beer kits.Grab your friends and spend the day browsing for the perfect presents, then stop by the German Delights stand for some Glühwein and a quick festive snack.

5. Speed Rack

When: December 14If you’re looking to score some drinks made by the fastest female bartenders in the city, make your way over to Brooklyn. On December 14th, the Music Hall of Williamsburg will be hosting Speed Rack, a ladies-only speed bartending competition that raises money for breast cancer.Watch these women put their cocktail crafting abilities to the test in record speed as you sip on a bunch of boozy punches and nibble on snacks from a variety of awesome local restaurants.
