FOUR HIDDEN COSTS OF MOVING

Moving is a pretty big Deal. It’s a life-changing event that can be very stressful to take on. When preparing to move, you may not consider some of the hidden costs associated with the process. But don't worry, we are here to help by unveiling some hidden costs that may pop up when you move.

Packing Supplies:

You would be surprised how quickly the cost of packaging supplies ads up. You will need boxes to pack up many of your household items. You will also need supplies like tape and bubble wrap to protect breakable items. Many people don’t consider that these items cost money.  To save money, go to local businesses and see if they  have any leftover packing boxes you can take. Most places won’t charge for this since they are most likely trying to get rid of them anyway.

Storage Fees:

If you are downsizing to a smaller space, you will have to consolidate a lot of your possessions. You can sell or donate as much as possible, but there may still be items that won’t fit in your new home. If you don’t want to part with these things, you can place them in storage. But be aware: Renting a storage facility can be expensive. The typical cost of a storage unit is around $700 per year.

Changes to Your Auto Insurance:

Auto insurance rates vary by state, and can increase depending on where you move. Your insurance rate can increase based on population and accident rates in our new location. You may even have to purchase a new policy depending on where you move. Make sure you research beforehand how your policy will change based on where you move. It may save you a bundle in the long run.

Utility Charges:

Utilities are another item that changes based on where you live. Utilities can increase based on usage, location and even how many rooms are in your home. Utility companies will even charge to turn the utilities on in your new home. Research makes this hidden cost easier to handle.
